February 1, 2012Indiana Right-to-Work Legislation is now Law
Though a rather contentious legislative issue, on February 1, 2011 Governor Mitch Daniels signed HB 1001 into law making Indiana the 23rd Right-to-Work State. The legislation, which bars union contracts from requiring non-union members to pay fees for representation, makes Indiana the first state in more than a decade to enact right-to-work legislation and the only one in the Midwestern manufacturing or rust belt to have such a law.
Supporters say the measure helps create a pro-business climate that attracts employers and increases jobs. Opponents say right to work leads to lower wages and poorer quality jobs. Regardless of who is ultimately right or wrong, one thing is for sure, already we’ve receiving quite a bit of interest from site selectors as well as companies about the issue with the hope of leveraging that interest into actual economic development projects for Southwest Indiana.
